Pavers

Pavers for Beachside Homes in Brevard & Indian River County, FL

Two things define building anything on the ground near the beach: the soil is sandy and always shifting a little, and when it rains, the water has to go somewhere. Pavers were practically made for both. Instead of one rigid surface that fights the ground and sheds every drop, a paver driveway or pool deck is hundreds of individual units that flex as the sand settles and let water drain right through the joints.

That's why so many of the best-looking driveways, pool decks, and patios on the barrier island are pavers, not poured concrete. We install paver hardscapes for homes from Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach down through Indialantic and Melbourne Beach, and along the Indian River coast in Vero Beach, Indian River Shores, and Orchid — chosen and built for what the coast actually does to a surface.

Why pavers suit a beachside home

This is where pavers and concrete genuinely part ways — and why pavers so often win near the ocean:

  • They flex with shifting, sandy soil. A poured slab is rigid, so when the sandy coastal ground moves, it cracks. A paver field is a flexible system: the individual units and sand joints absorb that movement and stay intact.
  • There's no steel to rust, so they can't spall. Reinforced concrete near the ocean corrodes from the rebar out, flaking apart over time. Pavers have no embedded steel, so that whole failure mode simply doesn't exist. (If you want the durable-slab option instead, see our foundations pages.)
  • They drain. Sand-filled joints let coastal downpours soak through instead of sheeting off, and true permeable paver systems take that further — useful where stormwater and impervious-surface rules apply.
  • A damaged unit lifts and resets. Stain, crack, or settle one section and we lift and replace or re-level just those pavers — no jackhammering and repouring a whole slab.

What we install in pavers

  • Screen Enclosure Foundations - we primarily only offer pavers when purchasing a screen enclosure
  • Driveways — flexible, repairable, and able to carry vehicle loads over coastal soil.
  • Pool decks and surrounds — cool, slip-resistant finishes around the pool (more below).
  • Patios and lanais — including the surface inside and around screen enclosures.

Paver options for the coast

Different materials, each with a coastal angle:

  • Concrete interlocking pavers — the versatile, cost-effective workhorse, in a wide range of colors and shapes.
  • Brick — classic, timeless, and extremely durable.
  • Travertine — a natural stone that stays notably cooler underfoot in the sun, which is why it's a favorite for beachside pool decks.

Pool decks: cool underfoot, grippy when wet

A beachside pool deck has to handle bare feet, splashout, and tracked-in sand all day. Pavers handle all three:

  • Heat — lighter colors, travertine, and porcelain stay cooler in coastal sun than dark poured surfaces, so the deck is walkable at midday.
  • Grip — textured paver surfaces give traction when wet and when sandy, unlike a slick troweled finish.
  • Saltwater splashout — saltwater pools are easy on swimmers but hard on surrounding surfaces over time; if a paver ever stains or etches, it gets replaced individually instead of resurfacing the whole deck.

How we install pavers that stay put in sandy soil

Pavers don't crack the way a slab does — but only if the base is built right, which on sandy coastal soil is everything:

  • Proper excavation and a compacted base — the foundation of the whole system; we dig to depth and compact in lifts so the field doesn't settle unevenly.
  • A bedding sand layer — screeded smooth to set the pavers on.
  • Tight laying pattern — units laid in the pattern that interlocks and carries load.
  • Edge restraints — these lock the perimeter so the field can't spread or creep apart in sandy ground over time.
  • Polymeric jointing sand — swept into the joints and set, it resists washout from rain and irrigation far better than plain sand, and fights weeds and ants in the joints.
  • Final compaction and sealing — to lock it in and add a coastal barrier against salt and staining.

Repairs and resetting — the paver advantage

This is something concrete can't offer. Because pavers are individual units over a sand base, almost anything that goes wrong is a localized, low-cost fix:

  • A stained or cracked paver is lifted out and replaced with a matching unit.
  • A spot that settles over the years is lifted, the base re-leveled, and the same pavers reset.
  • Joints that have lost sand are simply re-sanded.

No tear-out, no repour, no mismatched concrete patch.

What shapes your estimate

Every paver project is quoted to the space and the material:

  • Square footage — driveway, deck, or patio size.
  • Paver material — travertine and porcelain cost more than standard concrete pavers.
  • Pattern complexity — intricate or multi-color patterns add labor.
  • Base preparation — depth and any soil correction for the coastal subgrade.
  • Demolition — removing old concrete or pavers.
  • Edge work and sealing — restraints, borders, and a coastal sealer.

You get a clear, itemized estimate, and financing is available.

Caring for coastal pavers

Simple upkeep keeps them looking new for decades:

  • Reseal on the schedule we recommend to guard against salt and stains and to help with efflorescence.
  • Rinse off salt and sand with fresh water now and then.
  • Replace any damaged unit — a quick swap, not a project.
  • Keep an eye out for weeds or ants in the joints; polymeric sand limits both.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose pavers over poured concrete near the beach?

Pavers flex with shifting sandy soil instead of cracking, have no rebar to corrode and spall, drain better, and let you lift and reset a single damaged unit instead of repouring a slab. If you'd rather have a poured surface, our flatwork concrete page covers that.

Will pavers sink or shift in sandy soil?

Not with the base built right. Proper excavation, compaction, and edge restraints keep the field stable — and the flexible system actually handles coastal soil movement better than a rigid slab. If a spot does settle over the years, we lift and re-level it.

Do pavers get that white residue near the ocean?

Concrete pavers can show efflorescence — a harmless salt bloom — especially in a coastal, high-moisture setting. It typically fades and can be treated, and sealing helps prevent it. It's cosmetic, not structural.

Which pavers stay coolest for a beachside pool deck?

Lighter colors, travertine, and porcelain stay noticeably cooler underfoot than dark surfaces in our sun, and textured finishes keep them slip-resistant when wet. [Confirm your recommended coastal pool-deck options.]

Are pavers slippery around a pool or when sand gets tracked on?

No — textured paver surfaces give better grip wet and sandy than a smooth troweled finish, and tracked sand rinses right off.

Can pavers handle saltwater pool splashout?

Yes. And if a unit ever stains or etches from pool chemistry over time, it's replaced individually rather than resurfacing the whole deck.

Do I need a permit, and can pavers help with flood or stormwater rules?

Many projects require a permit, and permeable paver systems can help meet the impervious-surface and stormwater limits common on coastal lots. We handle the permitting.

How do you keep pavers from spreading or growing weeds in the joints?

Edge restraints lock the perimeter so the field can't creep in sandy soil, and polymeric jointing sand resists washout, weeds, and ants far better than plain sand.
